Portugal, through my eyes.
Not a checklist. A collection of things I’ve learned, noticed and considered worth knowing — from the moment you arrive in Lisbon to the places, neighbourhoods and experiences that have stayed with me.
What I would tell you at the hotel desk.
Think of this as your Lisbon starter pack. Save it before you arrive. These are the questions I have been asked again and again.
The easiest way to understand the city is to use it.
Lisbon’s public transport is integrated enough that you do not need to be an expert. Learn the basic system, keep Google Maps nearby and you will quickly become comfortable.
How early should you be at the airport?
My conservative rule is simple: give yourself enough time that a delay does not turn into a crisis.
Do not just collect monuments. Read the layers.
Lisbon makes more sense when you understand that different neighbourhoods represent different periods, functions and ways of life.
Campo de Ourique.
If you want to experience a part of Lisbon that feels residential, social and genuinely lived in, I would put Campo de Ourique on your map.

L’APE Italian Lounge
Some places deserve a place in the journey not only for what they serve, but for the people and neighbourhood behind them. These are partners I am pleased to introduce to my guests.
A cozy, artsy Italian aperitivo lounge near Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, in Graça. The food is amazing, and what makes this place especially meaningful to me is the heart its Italian owner has put into the business. He spends much of his time there, giving the lounge a personal touch that you can feel.
Graça is one of Lisbon’s most lively neighbourhoods, with local life all around and many of the city’s main attractions within easy reach. After a long walk through the city, this is the kind of place where I would bring my guests to slow down, enjoy something good, and experience a more personal side of Lisbon.

JNcQUOI Fysh — When Exceptional Service Lets You Lose Track of Time
Seafood restaurant We began with a glass of champagne each while waiting for our starters. I ordered the prawn taco with baby gem lettuce, mango and avocado; my date chose Maldonado acorn-fed Iberian ham with crystal bread and tomato. We chose Adega do Vulcão, Pedro Monte, from the Azores, and I had lobster rice with coriander for my main course. I cannot remember my date’s main course. Dessert became one of my favourite parts of the evening. Both the chocolate tart with Santini pistachio ice cream and the apple puff pastry with Santini sweet cream ice cream were unavailable. We had been so comfortable that we had not even realised the restaurant had been closed for more than an hour. Nobody rushed us or made us feel we had overstayed our welcome. Instead, our waiter worked with me to create something special off the menu. It was marvellous: soft, almost like a flan, with a flavour reminiscent of cheesecake. I even took a photograph because it looked so delicious. That gesture stayed with me. Excellent hospitality is about paying attention, being resourceful and making someone feel genuinely looked after. ✦ My recommendation: Arrive hungry. Very hungry. Every course makes you curious about what else you could try. The food deserves your attention, but the service made the evening particularly memorable. La Paparrucha — From a First Bite to a Panoramic Lisbon Evening
Argentinian steakhouse The following evening, my date wanted to surprise me with a Michelin-starred restaurant, but they were all fully booked. I sent him five options I had personally selected, and we agreed on La Paparrucha. Mamma mia. That decision made me so happy. At first, we were a little hesitant: the restaurant looked smaller than expected, and we had arrived just ten minutes before closing. I asked whether they were still serving. The answer was a very kind yes. The staff seated us by the window. Then we looked out and realised we had a panoramic view of Lisbon. In that moment, we knew we had made the right choice. I still find it difficult to explain the happiness of that first bite of the croquettes. They began an evening that only got better. The steak was a perfect cut, and paired with a delicious red Malbec, it took the experience from majestic to celestial. The Valencian torta cheesecake was marvellous too. What made the evening special was the combination: the view, the warm welcome despite our late arrival, the beautiful people around us, the level of service and food that genuinely made me happy. ✦ My recommendation: 100% recommended. Come for the steak, enjoy the Malbec, leave room for dessert and take time to appreciate the panoramic view of Lisbon. Sometimes the restaurant you choose after your first plan falls through becomes the highlight of the evening.
